Senior Director, Logistics

Status: Exempt (Salaried)

Department: Logistics

Position Summary

The Senior Director of Logistics provides leadership for Plug Power’s hydrogen logistics transportation functions. This role is responsible for defining and executing a scalable, cost-effective, and compliant logistics strategy that supports enterprise growth and operational excellence. This North America role (excluding Europe operations) leads up to 5 direct reports and carries responsibility for total transportation and logistics spend of $15M+ annually.

The Senior Director role leads the logistics organization, ensuring efficient movement and delivery of hydrogen, a safety-critical cryogenic hazardous material handled in both bulk liquid (LH2) and gaseous form, to customers while driving continuous improvement, risk mitigation, and technology enablement. This leader partners closely with Executive Leadership and cross-functional teams to align logistics capabilities with business priorities, support complex projects, and enhance overall supply chain performance.

Core Duties and Responsibilities

• Leads the strategy, planning, and execution for the movement and delivery of hydrogen and related products to customers and suppliers, ensuring safe, reliable, and cost-effective operations.

• Owns the transportation function and partners closely with Supply Operations, Engineering, and the Fuel Product Manager to align transport execution with sourcing, production, and product strategy.

• Establishes scalable logistics network strategies to support North America expansion, infrastructure development, and increasing operational complexity.

• Leads logistics capacity and asset planning, including cryogenic trailer fleet sizing, terminal and fueling infrastructure, and the associated capital plan.

• Provides oversight of all transportation modes, including bulk cryogenic liquid hydrogen and gaseous tube-trailer transport (the primary modes by cost and risk),

• Ensures logistics readiness and execution for new product launches, hydrogen deployments, and large-scale energy and infrastructure projects.

• Ensures adherence to compliance best practices and regulatory requirements while proactively mitigating risk.

• Builds and leads a high-performing, North America logistics organization, including talent development, succession planning, and organizational design.

• Drives enterprise-wide continuous improvement, cost optimization, and operational excellence across logistics operations, with explicit accountability for delivery costs and for product-loss (boil-off / venting) yield from load point to customer delivery.

• Establishes and monitors executive-level KPIs and reporting, including delivery cost per kg, on-time-in-full (OTIF), trailer utilization and turns, boil-off / product-loss rate, carrier performance, and DOT-recordable safety incident rate, to ensure performance, accountability, and alignment with business objectives and is able and comfortable reporting out to Executive Leadership and/or Board of Directors regarding such KPIs.

• Leads strategic sourcing and management of logistics providers, i.e. Logistics Sub-contractors

• Partners cross-functionally with Executive Leadership, Product Management, Finance, Legal, Procurement, Engineering, and Operations to align logistics strategy with business priorities.

• Ensures logistics performance meets the service obligations embedded in customer hydrogen supply agreements, including service levels, contingency and backup-supply commitments, and force-majeure provisions.

• Oversees risk management and business continuity planning to ensure resilience across the North America hydrogen network.

• Owns hazardous-materials emergency-response readiness, including spill/release response, incident command, carrier and driver training, and coordination with first responders and regulators following a transportation incident.

• Evaluates and implements logistics technologies, systems, and digital solutions to enhance scalability, efficiency, and visibility.

• Provides oversight of issue resolution, quality, and corrective actions across the supply chain.

• Travels as required.

• Performs all other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

• Master’s degree in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Business, Engineering, or related field; equivalent experience considered.

• 10+ years of logistics or supply chain experience, including leadership in complex, high-growth environments. Experience with cryogenics preferred.

• Deep expertise in transportation and logistics strategy, preferably within energy, industrial, or infrastructure sectors.

• Experience with hydrogen, hazardous materials, or over-dimensional logistics strongly preferred.

• Proven track record of building and scaling organizations, driving transformation, and delivering operational excellence.

• Strong financial acumen, including budgeting, cost optimization, and contract negotiation.

• Demonstrated ability to influence executive stakeholders and lead cross-functional alignment.

• Track record managing agreements across the full lifecycle - sourcing, negotiation, rate-adjustment windows, claims, and renewal.

• Proven experience negotiating, structuring, and administering multi-year transportation and logistics agreements with individual annual contract values of $1M+, or aggregate/total contract value of $5M+, including complex commercial terms such as index- or fuel-surcharge-based pricing, take-or-pay and minimum-volume commitments, rate-adjustment mechanisms, and liability/indemnity provisions. Knowledge of the hazardous-materials and motor-carrier rules central to hydrogen transport (PHMSA / 49 CFR HMR, FMCSA Hours-of-Service, CDL hazmat and tanker endorsements, CGA standards), as well as broader DOT regulations, C-TPAT, and global trade compliance frameworks.

• Experience implementing and maturing Transportation Management Systems, logistics technologies, and advanced operational methodologies.

• Exceptional leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills.

• Sound judgment operating in a safety-critical environment, including the ability to weigh reliability, safety, and cost trade-offs under time pressure.

• High level of professionalism, integrity, and accountability.

This is what this question poses: When do you focus and start working seriously? What are the hours you work optimally? Are you a night owl? A morning bird? Remote teams can be made up of people working on different shifts and around the world, so you won't necessarily be stuck in the 9-5 schedule if it's not for you...

2. HOW DO YOU USE THE DIFFERENT COMMUNICATION TOOLS IN DIFFERENT SITUATIONS?

When you're working on a remote team, there's no way to chat in the hallway between meetings or catch up on the latest project during an office carpool. Therefore, virtual communication will be absolutely essential to get your work done...

3. WHAT IS "WORKING REMOTE" REALLY FOR YOU?

Many people want to work remotely because of the flexibility it allows. You can work anywhere and at any time of the day...

4. WHAT DO YOU NEED IN YOUR PHYSICAL WORKSPACE TO SUCCEED IN YOUR WORK?

With this question, companies are looking to see what equipment they may need to provide you with and to verify how aware you are of what remote working could mean for you physically and logistically...

5. HOW DO YOU PROCESS INFORMATION?

Several years ago, I was working in a team to plan a big event. My supervisor made us all work as a team before the big day. One of our activities has been to find out how each of us processes information...

6. HOW DO YOU MANAGE THE CALENDAR AND THE PROGRAM? WHICH APPLICATIONS / SYSTEM DO YOU USE?

Or you may receive even more specific questions, such as: What's on your calendar? Do you plan blocks of time to do certain types of work? Do you have an open calendar that everyone can see?...

7. HOW DO YOU ORGANIZE FILES, LINKS, AND TABS ON YOUR COMPUTER?

Just like your schedule, how you track files and other information is very important. After all, everything is digital!...

8. HOW TO PRIORITIZE WORK?

9. HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR A MEETING AND PREPARE A MEETING? WHAT DO YOU SEE HAPPENING DURING THE MEETING?

Just as communication is essential when working remotely, so is organization. Because you won't have those opportunities in the elevator or a casual conversation in the lunchroom, you should take advantage of the little time you have in a video or phone conference...

10. HOW DO YOU USE TECHNOLOGY ON A DAILY BASIS, IN YOUR WORK AND FOR YOUR PLEASURE?

This is a great question because it shows your comfort level with technology, which is very important for a remote worker because you will be working with technology over time...
