Part-Time Squarespace Website Specialist (Remote, Flexible Hours)

The Common Good is a nonprofit, nonpartisan 501(c)(3) pro-democracy organization working to make our democracy work better. We bring top leaders and experts to the public and publish authoritative studies, and we've presented hundreds of events and programs, including Town Halls and Galas.

We're hiring a part-time website designer/developer with recent Squarespace experience to start right away. Experience with other simple-to-use platforms is also valuable. You'll improve and maintain our existing site: update pages and layouts, keep it fast and polished, and make sure people can find us through Google and through AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews.

Responsibilities

  • Build and update pages, sections, event listings, blog posts, and forms in Squarespace.
  • Make design improvements and fixes, including mobile layouts
  • Keep the site visible in search and AI tools:
  • Research the keywords and questions people use to look for organizations and events like ours
  • Write clear page titles, headings, meta descriptions, URL slugs, and image alt text
  • Organize content so AI tools can easily quote it, using plain-language summaries, FAQs, and clear speaker, date, and topic details on event pages
  • Make sure AI crawlers are allowed to read the site, and keep our organization's information consistent across the web
  • Improve page speed (optimize images, lighten pages and embeds)
  • Make small CSS tweaks when the built-in tools aren't enough
  • Manage Google Search Console and Analytics, and send a short monthly report on traffic and search performance
  • Use AI tools (e.g., Claude, ChatGPT) to work faster, always with human review

Requirements

  • Proven experience building and managing Squarespace sites. Experience with Squarespace 7.1 helpful.
  • Solid grasp of SEO and keyword research, plus a working understanding of how AI search tools find and cite websites
  • Comfortable with basic HTML and CSS for small adjustments. No custom development needed, as we want to maintain ease of use for non-coders.
  • Portfolio or links to live Squarespace sites you've worked on
  • Clear communicator who can work independently
  • About 10-15 hours per week, flexible schedule, with more hours while the site is being repaired and improved.

Pay: $30/hour

To apply: Send your portfolio and a short note about your Squarespace experience and how you help sites show up in search and AI tools to email "thecommongood.net".

LinkedIn screening questions

  • Link to a Squarespace site you've built or managed.
  • How many years of Squarespace experience do you have?
  • Describe one change you made that improved a site's search or AI visibility, and the result.
  • How would you help a nonprofit show up when someone asks ChatGPT about politics and policy or pro-democracy events?
  • Are you comfortable with $30/hour? (Yes/No)

9. HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR A MEETING AND PREPARE A MEETING? WHAT DO YOU SEE HAPPENING DURING THE MEETING?

Just as communication is essential when working remotely, so is organization. Because you won't have those opportunities in the elevator or a casual conversation in the lunchroom, you should take advantage of the little time you have in a video or phone conference...

10. HOW DO YOU USE TECHNOLOGY ON A DAILY BASIS, IN YOUR WORK AND FOR YOUR PLEASURE?
