About the position

The Commercial Analyst helps Zanskar determine where to build geothermal projects, how to price them, and which commercial structures support strong project economics. The role turns open-ended market questions into clear recommendations that guide development and deal strategy, helping projects reach customers faster and on stronger economics. The analyst assesses power-market risks and economics, compares candidate markets, builds investment cases using existing financial models, and analyzes pricing, costs, and customer economics. The role also researches behind-the-meter geothermal development, including regulatory questions and customer needs, and works with counsel to reach legal conclusions. It requires turning ambiguous questions into structured work plans and initial models or processes, synthesizing expert input, and preparing concise recommendations for senior leaders, including the CEO. The analyst partners with the finance team on shared models while owning day-to-day commercial analysis. The position is based at Zanskar’s headquarters in Salt Lake City, Utah, and reports to the Director of Commercial Strategy. It is full-time and salaried.

Responsibilities

  • Assess power price, congestion, basis, and curtailment risk for prospective projects; translate these into project economics and recommended underwriting prices.
  • Compare candidate power markets and recommend where Zanskar should focus, including the rationale and key uncertainties.
  • Build on existing financial models to create investment cases and test proposed deal terms and structures.
  • Analyze pricing, underlying costs, and customer economics to shape deals and pressure-test commercial terms.
  • Research behind-the-meter geothermal development, including regulatory questions, customer needs, and how to present the opportunity; work with counsel to reach legal conclusions.
  • Turn open-ended questions into structured work plans and build initial models, processes, or templates where none exist.
  • Consult market experts and synthesize their input into practical views on market rules, products, and risks.
  • Write concise memos for senior leadership, including the CEO, stating recommendations, assumptions, and uncertainties.
  • Independently flag issues, challenge team assumptions, and investigate concerns without waiting to be asked.
  • Partner with the finance team on shared models while owning day-to-day commercial analysis.

Requirements

  • Experience analyzing power markets, energy commercial strategy, or a closely related field; demonstrated sharp, independent work is more important than depth of experience.
  • Hands-on experience building or extending financial models in Excel or similar tools.
  • A track record of producing written recommendations or analyses that informed a business decision.
  • Understanding of power markets and how congestion, basis, curtailment, and ancillary services affect project earnings, or a clear ability to get up to speed quickly on nodal markets and unfamiliar market details.
  • Ability to build on existing financial models, adapt them to new situations, and connect price, cost, and deal-term assumptions to project returns.
  • Ability to structure ambiguous problems, make reasonable assumptions, and develop an initial analysis without an existing template.
  • Commercial judgment to connect market analysis to business decisions and make recommendations.
  • Willingness to take on work beyond a narrow job description and respectfully challenge assumptions when evidence supports doing so.
  • Clear written and verbal communication with senior leaders, market experts, and finance colleagues.

Nice-to-haves

  • Familiarity with nodal markets, congestion and basis, or ancillary services.
  • Experience building or critiquing power price forecasts.
  • Exposure to PPAs, hedging, or capacity markets.

Benefits

  • Paid holidays.
  • 18 days of PTO, with PTO accrual increasing based on tenure.
  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage.
  • Short- and long-term disability insurance and group life insurance.
  • Paid parental leave.
  • 401(k).
  • Stock options.
  • Growth opportunities at a company with a direct impact in displacing carbon emissions.

9. HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR A MEETING AND PREPARE A MEETING? WHAT DO YOU SEE HAPPENING DURING THE MEETING?

Just as communication is essential when working remotely, so is organization. Because you won't have those opportunities in the elevator or a casual conversation in the lunchroom, you should take advantage of the little time you have in a video or phone conference...

10. HOW DO YOU USE TECHNOLOGY ON A DAILY BASIS, IN YOUR WORK AND FOR YOUR PLEASURE?
