DevOps Engineer

GED Testing Service builds and operates the technology behind the GED high school equivalency credential: a student-facing portal, admin tools, mobile apps, and integrations with Pearson VUE for exam scheduling and Kibo for e-commerce. We are a joint venture between Pearson and the American Council on Education. Our platform runs on Microsoft Azure, with core workloads on Kubernetes (AKS) and production data on Azure SQL Managed Instance.

What You'll Do

Platform and reliability

  • Operate and troubleshoot AKS clusters: upgrades, deployments, ingress, and the supporting Azure infrastructure across production, staging and lower environments
  • Maintain and extend Terraform for networking, Application Gateway, Azure Firewall, Front Door, Key Vault and container registry
  • Build and improve Azure DevOps CI/CD pipelines, support zero-downtime deployments, and take part in production incident response

Data platform (high priority)

  • Keep our Azure SQL Managed Instance healthy: backups, monitoring, capacity, and operational confidence that production data is protected
  • Support secure analytics patterns that make data available to Tableau without exposing PII

Security and compliance

  • Provide technical evidence for audits, ISO 27001/27701 and client security questionnaires: encryption, access, logging, backups and platform controls
  • Own day-to-day security hygiene: vulnerability management, access certification, certificate lifecycle, and coordination of penetration tests and disaster recovery exercises

Partnership

  • Document and transfer knowledge about the system so the team is not dependent on any one person

What You Bring

Required

  • 5+ years in DevOps, platform engineering or SRE, including independent ownership of cloud infrastructure
  • Strong Microsoft Azure skills: AKS, networking, Key Vault, Application Gateway or similar ingress patterns
  • Hands-on experience with SQL Server in Azure (Managed Instance or equivalent): backups, monitoring, performance and operational troubleshooting
  • Terraform with disciplined plan/apply practices and remote state
  • Kubernetes operations: workloads, ingress, secrets, upgrades and persistent storage
  • CI/CD experience, Azure DevOps preferred
  • Ability to partner with a senior contractor on knowledge transfer in both directions, learning the existing system before changing it, and mentoring peers on reliability and automation practices

Strongly prefer

  • Minneapolis area, or able to come into the office regularly at the start of the role
  • Familiarity with security audits, questionnaires and control frameworks (ISO 27001/27701, StateRAMP or similar)
  • Experience designing secure analytics access patterns using ETL, reporting stores or other controlled approaches
  • Tableau Server support, including OAuth-based SSO integration
  • Regulated or high-availability environments (education, assessment, healthcare, fintech)

Our Stack

Azure · AKS · Terraform · Azure SQL Managed Instance · Azure DevOps · Docker/ACR · Key Vault · Redis · Application Gateway · Front Door · Splunk · New Relic · Tableau · Spring Boot · Angular

Why This Role

  • Real ownership of a platform serving live candidates, including the database behind them
  • Breadth beyond Kubernetes: SQL Managed Instance health, security, analytics architecture and legacy cleanup all matter here
  • Deep context from an experienced contractor who knows GEDTS inside and out, with the expectation that you become a second owner of it

Location and Availability

Full-time, primarily remote. We would like you in the Minneapolis office about once a week for the first few months, easing toward fully remote over time. Minneapolis-based candidates are a strong plus, but we will consider strong remote applicants.

This is not a traditional pager rotation, but you will need to be reasonably reachable via Slack outside business hours when production issues arise. Coverage is shared with the development team and the existing contractor.

Compensation at Pearson is influenced by factors including skill set, experience, and location.

The full-time salary range for this role is $120,000 – $148,000. This position is eligible to participate in an annual incentive program. Information on benefits can be found here.

Applications will be accepted through 10th November 2026. This window may be extended depending on business needs.

Common Interview Questions And Answers

This is what this question poses: When do you focus and start working seriously? What are the hours you work optimally? Are you a night owl? A morning bird? Remote teams can be made up of people working on different shifts and around the world, so you won't necessarily be stuck in the 9-5 schedule if it's not for you...

2. HOW DO YOU USE THE DIFFERENT COMMUNICATION TOOLS IN DIFFERENT SITUATIONS?

When you're working on a remote team, there's no way to chat in the hallway between meetings or catch up on the latest project during an office carpool. Therefore, virtual communication will be absolutely essential to get your work done...

3. WHAT IS "WORKING REMOTE" REALLY FOR YOU?

Many people want to work remotely because of the flexibility it allows. You can work anywhere and at any time of the day...

4. WHAT DO YOU NEED IN YOUR PHYSICAL WORKSPACE TO SUCCEED IN YOUR WORK?

With this question, companies are looking to see what equipment they may need to provide you with and to verify how aware you are of what remote working could mean for you physically and logistically...

5. HOW DO YOU PROCESS INFORMATION?

Several years ago, I was working in a team to plan a big event. My supervisor made us all work as a team before the big day. One of our activities has been to find out how each of us processes information...

6. HOW DO YOU MANAGE THE CALENDAR AND THE PROGRAM? WHICH APPLICATIONS / SYSTEM DO YOU USE?

Or you may receive even more specific questions, such as: What's on your calendar? Do you plan blocks of time to do certain types of work? Do you have an open calendar that everyone can see?...

7. HOW DO YOU ORGANIZE FILES, LINKS, AND TABS ON YOUR COMPUTER?

Just like your schedule, how you track files and other information is very important. After all, everything is digital!...

8. HOW TO PRIORITIZE WORK?

9. HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR A MEETING AND PREPARE A MEETING? WHAT DO YOU SEE HAPPENING DURING THE MEETING?

Just as communication is essential when working remotely, so is organization. Because you won't have those opportunities in the elevator or a casual conversation in the lunchroom, you should take advantage of the little time you have in a video or phone conference...

10. HOW DO YOU USE TECHNOLOGY ON A DAILY BASIS, IN YOUR WORK AND FOR YOUR PLEASURE?

This is a great question because it shows your comfort level with technology, which is very important for a remote worker because you will be working with technology over time...
